Have you ever been a waitress or waiter in your lifetime? What would you say if I told you that you could earn over $1,000 extra dollars per month by working that job again?! I can already see all the furrowed brows out there, and I completely understand.
When you were a kid, you most likely worked at a local diner that paid an hourly wage of $3 or $4, and then you made a few lousy tips on top of that. If you worked 40 hours a week, you still might not make $1,000 by the time the month came to a close! So, obviously, I’m not encouraging you to strap on your old uniform and head back there.
Waitressing Like a Pro
Since you already have experience in the restaurant business, and more importantly as a server, you should have the upper hand on quite a few other applicants to the restaurants that pay big money. “Which restaurants are these?” you might ask.
Well, remember those restaurants that you used to work at? What was the most popular meal? I bet it was a $5 burger. What’s 15% of $5? A whopping 75 cents. That’s why you didn’t make big money there. The price of the food was cheap, which means that your tip was peanuts as well!
In order to make $1,000 a month, you need to apply to those restaurants that serve expensive meals. Fancy steakhouses, high class seafood restaurants, the best Italian restaurant in the city – Get your foot into these places and you’ll soon be making more money than you ever dreamed as a waiter or waitress!
Still Don’t Believe Me?
Alright alright, I can tell that some of you are still having doubts about this whole server gig. Before you’re willing to strap on a uniform and work nights and weekends, you want to know that this money is for real. I understand, so let’s dig into the details.
At these higher class restaurants, it’s not uncommon for people to order a glass of wine, an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. Even if the restaurant is only semi-classy, this would still cost a minimum of $40 for the customer. So, let’s say that you handle 3 tables per hour, and each table averages 4 people. That means that the total meal costs per hour (for the tables your handling) is 40*3*4, which is $480. After 3 hours of this, you’ll earn 15% of $1,440, which is $216!!
To earn your $1,000, all you have to do is work five nights in the entire month! Who would have thought that serving could be so profitable?!

Editor’s note: We have 6 kids so when my family goes out to eat at even a restaurant like Olive Garden, the tab is about $120. The mandatory 18% tip means that the server is getting over $20 just from our table. So I can see where it is possible to make some decent extra money by waiting tables on a busy Friday or Saturday night a few times per month.
