You’ve likely heard the advice not to blog if you’re only in it for the money. Considering the amount of time blogging takes and the sheer effort growing your blog takes, this is good advice.
Still, if you blog because you love it, why not try to make some money while you’re blogging, right?
Eric Allyn, author of How to Build a Blog That Makes Money: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Starting and Profiting from a Blog, hopes to help you not only build a popular blog, but also make money from your blog.
Allyn is a good one to write this book because for the last six years, he’s built and made money from 50 different websites.
Research Before You Create Your Blog
If you’re new to blogging, you’ll likely appreciate this book. (A nice bonus is that the book is only $2.99 on Kindle, so it’s easy on your wallet.)
Allyn opens the book by asking you to research your blog carefully BEFORE you begin it. Is there a demand for your blog’s topic? What works well in the field you’re interested in blogging about?
Then he asks that you take just as much time determining what you want to name your blog.
When you have all those things figured out, you’re ready to create your blog.
Creating Your Blog
Allyn claims that you can create your blog in 5 minutes. I’m not sure if it will go that quickly, but following Allyn’s advice, you can likely create your blog in less than an hour.
What to Write About
Now that you have your blog, Allyn gives advice on the best types of blog posts to write as well as the advantages to each type:
- how to and list blog posts,
- evergreen blog posts,
- case studies,
- a series of blog posts
How to Make Money with Your Blog
In this section, Allyn delves into what everyone wants to know. How do you make money with a blog? He mentions eight ways. Some of them are to be expected such as being part of an affiliate program or using Google AdSense. However, there are other unexpected suggestions such as creating a forum on your blog or selling a video course.
How to Drive Traffic to Your Blog
Of course, you may have all the ways to make money in place on your blog, but you still need traffic. Allyn gives four major ways to draw traffic to your blog as well as offers a number of other suggestions for driving traffic, if you have the time such as commenting on others’ blogs.
Creating an Email List
Finally, Allyn wraps up by stating the importance of an email list to create brand recognition in your readers and to gain trust so they will be more open to anything you need to sell.
Should You Buy the Book?
For a new blogger, this book is a gold mine of information and well worth the price. If you’re a more experienced blogger, you may still learn a few new things from Allyn.
