I try to put out my online earnings report on the first Saturday of the month, but with soccer and a night out with my wife, it just had to settle for being close to that time. April turned out to be a somewhat disappointing month which you will soon see. I am working hard to get to the point that I can be assured of at least some monthly revenue so I am trying to enhance and diversify revenue streams which I will discuss later in the report.
For now, let’s just jump right into the bad news, starting with the revenue:
Gross Online Earnings for April 2012: $63.27
Total Expenses for April 2012: $315.24
- Author Payments: $125.04 for this blog to Melissa and Derek
- Quarterly Payment for Carnival Submissions: $144
- Advertising Payment Commission: $31.25
- Hosting: $9.95 for Host Gator. I am an affiliate and if you want to sign up, feel free to use the banner on the left.
- Author Payment for Penny Thots: $5
Net Online Earnings for March 2012: ($251.97) For you non-accountants, the parentheses mean negative. In other words, I lost money.
This is the first time that I have ever lost money during a month while writing online. That is because I am trying to grow my online presence and my expenses are higher, but revenue fell off the cliff. As most of us online entrepreneurs know, Google wields a lot of power and sometimes changes in algorithms (and Page Rank) can have a large impact on little guys like me.
As for the month of May, I do expect it to be a little bit better. Obviously, the quarterly payment of $144 won’t occur. Plus the author payments to Derek and Melissa will be less due to the lack of profit at this blog (we have a profit sharing arrangement).
Working on Monthly Revenue
Depending upon ad revenue is not guaranteed so I have been working to enhance an existing source while at the same time developing another. First, I am wanting to get my HubPages Ad Program revenue to the point where I can have monthly payments. I have been over $40 for the last two months and the payout is $50. This would then cover the majority of the monthly expenses. I am working on this by making a big push and writing an article each day during May.
So far, I have published 4 since I missed one day which was incredibly busy with life. I will try to make it up later today and write two. I need to make $1.67 per day to get a monthly payment on the months with 30 days. So far in the first 4 days of May, I have made $7.67 which is above the target.
I am also planning to diversify my income streams online by writing an ebook. This won’t help for next month and would probably take a year before I can see any major additions to monthly income. However, I figure that I might as well give it a shot. I have enough material in blogging posts to add up to a small novel so writing won’t be the biggest issue. Time will. So I will be setting aside some time and posting twice per week on Cash Flow Mantra instead of three.
I plan on posting my progress on the second Saturday of each month right here on this blog. So check in next weekend to see if I got any writing done. I hope you have a good remainder of the weekend and that your earnings were better than mine in April.

The latest google algorithm update affected my measly earnings as well. Though I noticed you report earnings on a cash rather than earned basis – is that the reason for the low revenue this month? Is it all being “banked” til May?
I’m following your Hubpages 30 hubs in 30 days challenge with interest. I too have noticed that publishing new hubs brings in good traffic, a small percentage of which “sticks”. I’m going to find your latest hub – I really enjoy your discussions on protection via puts and options. I understand the theory but its one of those things I haven’t put into practice yet…not that my portfolio warrants much protection
All the best!

There is some money that will show up in future months which may help for those. I should get a HubPages payment in May and am hoping to start getting monthly payments sometime this year. The sooner, the better.
I concur…probably a momentary dip. You’ll be back in the black in no time! This is a quality site.

Thanks. I hope you are right.
I fell off of Hubpages and haven’t wrote one Hub there this year. That being said, my 36 existing Hubs are now earning me about a dollar per day ($30/month) so I’m hopeful that keeps growing.

That is impressive for a small number of Hubs. I have more than 200 and don’t earn much more than $30 per month.
What about researching keywords in Google AdWords? Choose one with low competition and high price per click. Write down the article tailored for this keyword. Post on HubPages and link to that article from your other articles on HubPages. It will help you to rank up in search.

I have done that to some extent in the past. But with the search algorithms changing constantly, I wonder whether that is as effective anymore. Instead, I will be writing about what I enjoy.
