Last summer my daughter wanted to plant a box garden so we went out and got some wood along with some soil and seeds. We planted tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots with plans of eating from the bounty during the summer. Well, life got busy and my daughter lost interest so all we managed to get out of that garden was a few sickly tomatoes, some malformed carrots and yellowish ugly cucumbers. Needless to say, failing to tend to the garden, weed it, and water it appropriately led to its demise over time.
A Slow Blog Death
The same holds true for most anything in life including blogs. Recently, I have been witnessing a disturbing trend. Traffic at this blog and at Cash Flow Mantra have been declining (at least last month, Penny Thots seems to have reversed course). You can see it in the numbers below:
|Month||Cash Flow Mantra||Grand Per Month||Penny Thots||Total|
Now the numbers from January of this year are skewed by the fact that I was holding a giveaway which included going to the site and commenting, liking on Facebook, etc so those numbers are falsely elevated. However, February and March should represent baseline traffic based upon my efforts.
As you can see, my efforts faded away during the summer. I was busy with work, softball, and golfing when possible. Not that I am making excuses, per se, but I am simply stating the facts. As a result, traffic has suffered which shouldn’t be at all surprising.
Turning It Around
Now that summer is done and I have a little more free time, I want to turn this trend around. This will likely involve only 2 simple tasks to stop the trend. Once I have done that, I can see where I want to go after that. So what I plan for the next several months is:
- More content. Only publishing 2 posts in July and August on Cash Flow Mantra is not the way to build traffic. I also slowed down my Thursday posts on this site so little new content was available to readers. Not good. My goal will be to published twice per week here again and twice per week at CFM. Penny Thots is already published 5-7 days per week so I think there is enough content there due to the fact that others are helping to provide content.
- More commenting and interaction. In the early days of the blogs, I did more commenting on other blogs which is a good way to introduce yourself to other bloggers and remind readers that you still exist. I plan on simply commenting once each day during the month of November on behalf of each of the blogs and see what happens. I will probably also do a few round-up type posts of good articles that I have read during the week. A little link love can go a long way.
I think that this is all it will take. It shouldn’t take a tremendous amount of time, but I am betting that I will see some good results. From there, I could branch out into more social media or guest posting, but I will take it one step at a time. I would like to see traffic increase by about 10% to over 3000 total visits by the end of the year.
I think I can do it.
